The Arizona Department of Transportation is accepting comments on a feasibility study to reopen the Apache Trail at Fish Creek Hill.
The Arizona Department of Transportation has initiated a comprehensive study to evaluate the viability of reopening the currently inaccessible seven mile segment of the Apache Trail situated at Fish Creek Hill, as mandated by an Arizona appropriation bill. With the objective of ascertaining the feasibility of this endeavor, the department is diligently examining various factors and conducting extensive research. The reopening of this section holds significant potential for enhancing accessibility and promoting tourism in the area, and as such, it necessitates a thorough investigation into its practicality and logistical requirements.
ADOT is organizing a crucial in-person public meeting to actively engage with the community and gather valuable input on the study recommendations. This meeting serves as an exceptional opportunity for individuals to express their opinions, concerns, and suggestions regarding the study. In addition to the in-person gathering, ADOT is also welcoming comments via email, telephone, and traditional mail.
The underlying objective of this comprehensive study is to explore the feasibility of reopening SR 88 to vehicles. By thoroughly examining various factors and variables, such as traffic demands, infrastructure requirements, and environmental impacts, ADOT aims to form a well-informed decision regarding the potential revival of this significant roadway. Moreover, the study aims to identify potential improvements that can be implemented, closely considering their impact and the associated costs. By doing so, ADOT seeks to enhance the resilience of the roadway, ensuring it can withstand future storm events effectively and mitigate any potential risks.
The meetings and collected comments will be facilitated by a company called Logan Simpson Design LLC. Logan Simpson Design is an environmental consulting firm headquartered in Tempe, Arizona. They help facilitate various planning efforts through state and federal governments, including travel management planning, community planning, landscape architecture design, and cultural resource management.
Background
The section of the world-famous Apache Trail, stretching from Fish Creek Hill to Apache Lake Marina, has been closed since 2022 due to a rockfall caused by severe flooding from Tropical Storm Lorena and the Woodbury wildfire that devastated the area. The prolonged closure is situated near the base of Fish Creek Hill and has resulted in the road deteriorating severely, leading to further damage to culverts and barriers.
The Apache Trail is a scenic road in Arizona, known for its stunning views of the Sonoran Desert and Superstition Mountains. It spans approximately 40 miles (64 kilometers), starting near Apache Junction and terminating at Roosevelt Dam. Along the trail, you can explore attractions like Lost Dutchman State Park, Tortilla Flat, Apache Lake Marina, and Tonto National Monument. The trail is popular among nature lovers and offers an adventurous road trip experience through Arizona’s beauty.
Built around 1906, the Apache Trail was Arizona’s first state highway and stands as a testament to the powerful men and women who courageously constructed the marvelous and awe-inspiring feat of engineering. Arizona Backcountry Explorers has launched a comprehensive and impactful campaign with a resolute determination to reinstate and revitalize this iconic treasure.
